Police in Iganga have confirmed the identities of seven people who died in a fatal road crash that occurred on Friday night along the Jinja–Iganga highway.
The accident happened at around 11:35pm on March 20, 2026, at Namukunyu and involved a Mercedes-Benz Actros trailer, registration number KDU 206C/ZF 0842, and a Toyota Hiace taxi, registration number UBR 062Q.
According to preliminary police findings, the taxi was travelling from Jinja towards Iganga when the driver attempted to overtake another vehicle. In the process, it collided head-on with the oncoming trailer, resulting in the instant death of several occupants and leaving others seriously injured.
The deceased have been identified as Mudasiru Kibanda, 28, a resident of Kakajo Zone in Nateete, Wakiso District; Isaac Sabina, 28, from Semuto in Nakaseke District; Abudallah Nyiro from Busia District; and Samuel Odokonyero, 28, from Nwoya District
Others are Eddie Ngolobe, 24, a resident of Muwayo in Bugiri District; Edris Wandera, 34, from Lumiino in Busia District; and Majidu Balijuka Kirungi, 32, from Masindi District.
Six other occupants of the taxi sustained injuries and were rushed to nearby health facilities for medical attention, although their conditions had not yet been disclosed by press time.
The scene of the accident was visited by the Officer in Charge of Traffic in Iganga and a team of investigators, who documented evidence to aid ongoing inquiries. The bodies of the deceased were conveyed to Nakavule Hospital mortuary for postmortem examinations.
Both vehicles involved in the crash have since been towed to Iganga Central Police Station parking yard, where they are pending mechanical inspection as part of the investigation process.
Busoga East Regional Police Spokesperson ASP Michael Kasadha said investigations are ongoing to establish the exact cause of the accident, although dangerous overtaking is suspected to have played a major role.
The incident adds to a growing number of road crashes on Uganda’s highways, renewing concern among authorities over driver discipline and adherence to traffic regulations.
